Define the project
A useful brief gives a supplier enough context to identify open questions. It does not need to contain a finished formula. Start with the intended product, target species and market, then separate confirmed requirements from preferences.
Describe formulation requirements
List proposed ingredients and why they are being considered. Leave ingredient amounts and serving directions for qualified formulation review when they are not established. Include any ingredients to exclude. A reference product can explain an idea, but its label is not a complete manufacturing specification.
Connect formula and packaging
Describe the preferred format, fill quantity and packaging concept. Explain the intended serving routine. If several formats remain possible, ask for their development implications rather than comparing quotations for different scopes as though they were identical.
Clarify the commercial scope
State the estimated initial order and desired launch window as planning inputs. Ask what minimum order, material availability and development work apply to the actual project. Clarify responsibility for artwork, market review, testing and shipment documentation.
Agree on the next decision
Before sampling, record the brief version and the sample objective. Identify which documents are needed for review and who will approve the next stage. If requirements change, request an updated scope. A sample revision should not be mistaken for production approval.
